Banter Quintet
Join us at Aperture Coffee Bar on July 3rd for a Miles Davis Tribute, featuring musicians from Capilano University.
Led by Ben Cai, this group is made up of players who spent the past year really focused on jazz studies and bebop at CapU. Nathan Lintott, Marta Kalmar, Elliot Ashton, and Ayden Landsman are all recent graduates, and this set is a chance for us to share what we’ve been working on and developing through school and playing together.
We’ll be playing music from Kind of Blue, one of the most important albums in jazz. It didn’t just define a moment in time—it changed where jazz went after. The way it deals with space, melody, and harmony opened up a whole new direction for improvisation that still shapes how we play today.
I’m really grateful to be playing this music with these four graduates, and to share a night focused on something that’s been such a big influence on all of us. It’s been a year of a lot of listening, learning bebop, and trying to figure out how to say more through improvisation.
