WHY "APERTURE"?

IN 2013, OUR FOUNDER RYUL AND A MAN NAMED BO WOULD START TWO BUSINESSES ALONGSIDE EACHOTHER, ONE A CAFE, AND THE OTHER A PHOTOGRAPY BUSINESS. IN HONOR OF THEIR CLOSE COOPERATION, THE CAFE CAME TO BE KNOWN AS “APERTURE”

THE DEFINITION OF AN APERTURE IS: - “a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture and focal length of an optical system determine the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane”.

AS WELL AS BEING AN REFERENCE TO THE PHOTOGRAPHY INDUSTRY, IT IS ALSO OUR DESIRE FOR OUR CAFE TO BE A LENS THROUGH WHICH LIGHT CAN SHINE INTO THE COMMUNITY.

THE EACH SITE ALSO HAVE A UNIQUE TITLE, BASED ON THE F-NUMBER OF DIFFERENT LENS APERTURES, WITH f1/2.8 BEING THE MOST COMMONLY USED, WHILE STILL PROVIDING THE BEST QUALITY ONE COULD EXPECT. f/1.2 BEING A LARGER CALIBER, ALLOWS EVEN MORE LIGHT THROUGHT THE LENS.

MEET THE TEAM

RYUL AND EDDIE MET WHEN THEY WERE 16 IN ART SCHOOL. SINCE THEN THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CLOSE FREINDS, AND WENT TO STUDY ART AND DESIGN AT A UNIVERISTY LEVEL. EVENTUALLY, THEY WOULD BECOME BROTHERS-IN-LAW, FAMILY. TODAY, THEY COOPERATE CLOSELY TO BRING ABOUT THE BEST POSSIBLE STADARD OF SERVICE, WHILE STILL STAYING TRUE TO THEIR PASSIONS, SUCH AS JAZZ AND MOTOBIKES.

OLIVIA IS THE IN-HOUSE BAKER, WHO PUTS CARE AND ATTENTION IN EACH AND EVERY PRODUCT SHE MAKES, MAKING SURE THAT EVERTHING HAS THAT EXTRA PERSONAL TOUCH.

THE TEAM IS COMPRISED OF ONLY INDIVIUALS WHO ARE NOT ONLY BUBBLING WITH PERSONALITY, BUT ALSO HAVE THE DESIRE TO PROVIDE

f/2.8

2.8 WAS THE FIRST SHOP THAT RYUL OPENED IN APRIL 2013 ON BROADWAY. IT WAS MAINLY THEMED AROUND SIMPLY COFFEE AND BOOKS, TAKING INSPIRATION FROM VINTAGE FRENCH BOOKSTORES AND MODERN MINIMALISM. SLOWLY, HE STARTED TO INJECT HIS OWN PERSONALITY INTO THE STORE, STARTING WITH SIMPLE CHAIR ADDITIONS. WHEN EDDIE CAME ON BOARD, HE BROUGHT WITH HIM KNOWLEDGE FROM HIS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY, AND TOGETHER THEY WORKED ON BIGGER PROJECTS, SUCH AS CREATING THEIR OWN FURNITURE AND DECOR. THIS STEADY AND CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT THROUGH THE YEARS, AND THE INBUILT DESIRE TO ONE-UP THEMSELVES EVERYTIME, WOULD BECOME THE REASON FOR THE UNIQUE DESIGN AND CHARACTER OF THE CAFE TODAY.

f/1.2

RYUL AND EDDIE CAME ACROSS AN OLD AND WELL-KNOWN CAFE KNOWN AS THE "GRIND AND GELLARY" ON MAIN ST. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAD COME INTO A RUT OVER THE YEARS. SO RYUL AND EDDIE MADE THE DECISION TO BUY AND REVITALIZE THE CAFE, REPURPOSING IT INTO THE MOTORBIKE-THEMED JAZZ CAFE THAT IT IS TODAY,  PAYING STRONG HOMAGE TO THE JAZZ-SCENE OF ‘50-’70. TO STAY TRUE TO BOTH OF THESE IDENTITIES, APERTURE f/1.2 HOLDING A JAZZ NIGHT ON SATURDAY NIGHTS, AS WELL AS HOSTING THE "CAFE MOTO" CLUB, A GROUP SHARES OUR PASSIONS.
